Top 3 Late-Winter Things to Do in Kansas City

Winter is (finally!) winding down in Kansas City and we’re all looking forward to spring! There are a few favorite things here in KC that you can only do during wintertime. Here’s our list of our Top 3 best late-winter things to do in the area:
Snow Creek
This skiing, snowboarding and tubing paradise right here in KC has snow even if you don’t! Just 40 miles north of downtown KCMO, Snow Creek is nestled in the small town of Weston, Mo., right off I-29. It opened in 1986 and Snow Creek has more than 60 snow-making machines with the ability to pump 3,000 gallons of water per minute – allowing it to churn out snow and cover 100% of its terrain in just 72 hours. As long as temps stay below freezing, they can make their own snow!
Snow Creek features 12 trails ranging from beginner to expert, five lifts and a 300-foot vertical drop. There are two terrain parks, one for beginners and another for advanced/expert skiers. They have a ski lodge featuring a bar and lounge, and a cafeteria and pizza shop when you need to eat or warm up.
If you prefer tubing, the tube park track is 700 feet long with more than five lanes. There’s a picnic/viewing area with a bonfire pit if you’d rather watch than ride.
Snow Creek is typically open mid-December though mid-March, weather-permitting. Grab your gloves, hats, snowsuits and friends and have fun!
Ice Skating Outdoors
If you want to pretend to be an Olympic figure skater or hockey player, there are still a few options for ice skating in the elements:
- The Crown Center Ice Terrace is open through March 11. This season marks the rink’s 45th year. Don’t miss out on two-for-one Tuesdays after 5pm!
- In the Northland, the Rink at Burlington Creek offers outdoor ice skating or hockey for the public.
- In the Shawnee Mission area, you can skate at the Kansas City Ice Center and Pavilion. Early spring learn-to-skate and late winter hockey lessons are also available.
Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championship
If you like sports, this is one of the best things to do in KC any time of the year! The championship features some of the nation’s best post-season basketball, and the games usually sell out.
Spring will be here before you know it, so better take advantage of these late-winter activities while you still can! We are not the best skiers or ice skaters in Kansas City, and we’ll never win a Big 12 Championship, but we will work hard to provide you with the best home buying and selling experience in the area!
